There’s a lot to do this week in Proviso Township. Here is just a small sampling of events available for you and the family:

Treat yourself to breakfast and advice

On Saturday, March 2, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Maywood Youth Mentoring will host its monthly free youth breakfast. Topic: How stress can knock you off your game. Speakers: D89 educators in partnership with the Illinois Education Association Opportunity Coalition.

Come hear the candidates for D209 school board

On Saturday, March 2, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at Second Baptist Church, 436 S. 13th Ave. in Maywood, Village Free Press will host a forum for candidates running for the Proviso Township High School District 209 school board. We’re taking questions ahead of time to ensure the forum goes smoothly. Please submit any appropriate, substantive question for candidates you may have to thevillagefreepress@gmail.com.

Enjoy Walther Christian Academy’s choirs

On Sunday, March 3, 4 p.m., at St. John Lutheran Church, 305 Circle Ave. in Forest Park, the choirs of Walther Christian Academy will perform under the direction of Walther Music Director Lori Boyer.

The featured choirs will include the Concert Choir, A Cappella Choir, Chamber Choir and the Christian Minstrels.  Admission is free and parking is available. A free will offering will be collected.

Earlier that morning, the Walther Chamber Choir will participate in St. John’s service at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend.  Following the service will be an information session for prospective middle and high school students led by Walther’s principal, Paul Goffron. This session is open to the community and all are welcome to come and learn more about the benefits of a Walther education, now starting at sixth grade.

Learn about a new book on Proviso East

On Thursday, March 7, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson Blvd. in Forest Park, author Robert Cox will host the first of a series of discussions about his new book, Curious Proviso, Observations of an American Urban High School.
