There’s a lot to do this week in Proviso Township. Here is just a small sampling of events available for you and the family:

Get connected with community gardeners

On Wednesday, May 8, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Maywood Park District, 921 S. 9th Ave. in Maywood, the Urban Garden Connection will host its first 2019 meeting. The connection brings together local gardeners and interested community members in Proviso Township within a gardening network that fosters community and celebrates local agriculture.

Join the Forgiveness Series

On Wednesdays, May 9, May 16, May 23 and May 30, 5:30 p.m., at the Bellwood Public Library, 600 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, join a discussion on the “I Forgive You” series with author T. Dwayne Smith, who will lead the talk and offer lessons to help you to make the decision to forgive. All participants will receive a free copy of the book and a work book. Registration required. Ages 13 and up.

On Saturday, May 11, 12 p.m., at Proviso East High School Stadium, 801 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, attend the Proviso East Battle of the Bands. Bands, drumlines and dance groups from the Chicago area, Michigan and Ohio will compete for bragging rights.

Treat your mother to the Wynning Way

On Saturday, May 11, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Afriware Books, 1701 S. 1st Ave. (Suite 400 in the Eisenhower Tower) in Maywood, join a celebration of mothers with featured Maisha S. Wynn, a lifestyle specialist and author of The Wynning Way: A Guide to Creating Success Your Way.

Jewelry designer Kimberly Duncan, natural bath and body products owner Petrina McKinnor and 9-year-old entrepreneur and CEO Haley Anderson will also be in attendance.

Attend a free resource fair

On Saturday, May 11, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the Lightford Recreation Center, 809 Madison St. in Maywood, attend the Maywood Youth Summer Activities Resource Fair. More than 50 summer youth and young adult offerings, free sample experiences in kick boxing, summer job opportunities for ages 14 to 24, college scholarships covering up to 80 percent of tuition and a tour of the new Lightford Recreation Center.

Learn about Alzheimer’s

On Wednesday, May 15, 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., at the Bellwood Public Library, 600 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, attend Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia. Alzheimer’s is not normal aging. It’s a disease of the brain that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Learn about the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, Alzheimer’s disease stages and risk factors, current research, available treatments, and resources available through Alzheimer’s Association.
