Police officers from area departments took to the rooftops of local Dunkin’ locations during the annual “Cop on a Rooftop” fundraiser on May 17. The initiative is designed to raise funds for Special Olympics Illinois.

According to Broadview village officials, Cop on a Rooftop kicks off a season of fundraising that culminates with local police departments participating in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Once the torch completes its journey to Bloomington, Ill., the Special Olympics Summer Games begin.

“We are proud of our affiliation with Special Olympics Illinois and we look forward to this year’s games,” Broadview officials noted in the village’s newsletter.

On Friday, police officers were on Dunkin’ rooftops, as well as on foot near the coffee chain’s driveways (buckets of change and soft money in hand), from 5 a.m. until noon.

In Maywood, Det. Angela Patterson took to the roof of the Dunkin’ at 1317 S. 1st Ave., along with Officers Robert Dolan and Brian Daniels.

By around 11 a.m., Patterson and her colleagues had raised more than $400.

“My goal is to get $500,” she said, adding that members of the Maywood Police Department will also participate in the annual Torch Run.

“I think this is a great thing that’s happening and we need to keep it going,” Patterson said. VFP
