Explore youth opportunities

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, 6 p.m., at the Lightford Recreation Center, 809 Madison St. in Maywood, attend an informational meeting about career and life readiness opportunities for young people in the community. Watch ‘Spider Man’ under the stars for free

On Friday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m., at the Proviso East Football Field, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, join community members for a free One Proviso Safe Summer Night featuring the movie “Spider Man.” For more info, contact Maywood Trustee Isiah Brandon at (708) 261-9217 or District 209 Communications Director Cynthia Moreno at (708) 545-3471. 

Enjoy the Taste of Bellwood

On Friday, Aug. 9, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., between Eastern Ave. and 25th Ave. in Bellwood, join community members throughout Proviso Township for the first day of the Taste of Bellwood. The annual three-day event will feature food and non-food vendors, entertainment, a Sunday Gospel Fest and a Car and Bike Show on Saturday at 4 p.m., among other festivities.

Learn about Proviso Township’s Handyman program  

On Saturday, Aug. 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, learn about the Proviso Township Handyman program. For more info, call (708) 343-1847 or email mpld@maywoodlibrary.org.

Learn about Medicare options

On Saturday, Aug. 10, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, learn about Medicare options in a free workshop hosted by Theo Maynard from Premier Medicare Benefits. Attend a presentation on suicide

On Saturday, Aug. 10, 1 p.m., at Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, attend a presentation that covers what’s known about suicide and how it can be prevented. Participants will learn the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot warning signs in others and how to keep ourselves and our community safe. Speak out against violence

On Saturday, Aug. 10, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the corner of 9th Ave. and Madison in Maywood, join Mothers of Murdered Sons for a Community Response to Victims of Violence. The organization will respond to the recent murders, suicides and reckless homicides that have affected families in Proviso Township.

Rev. David Lowe from Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood will officiate. Asking all pastors and community leaders to attend.

Learn about cannabis

On Tuesday, Aug. 13, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at Village Council Chambers, 125 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, join state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson and Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins for a Cannabis Town Hall. People with all viewpoints are encouraged to attend.
