The old Maywood Aldi at 215 Madison St., is poised to become a blood plasma donation center.

Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins confirmed on Friday that the building had been purchased by a plasma donation company. The purchase price or the exact date of the sale is not yet known.

The former Aldi location is listed on the website of Grifols Plasma — a network of plasma donation centers across the country — as opening soon. Each center is managed by one of three companies.

Biomat USA, Inc., one of those Los Angeles-based subsidiaries, will manage the Maywood location.

Officials with Grifols or Biomat could not be contacted on Friday evening for comment. Perkins said that Grifols representatives introduced themselves to community members at the Maywood Police Department’s annual National Night Out celebration, held Aug. 6 behind the police station.

The mayor said that Grifols purchased the nearly 16,000-square-foot building directly from Aldi, which closed the store — their only Maywood location — in 2016.

She said that the company had come before the Board of Trustees earlier this year, but that most members were against the idea of a plasma company setting up inside of the last full-service grocery store to have operated in the village.
