Learn about the Exploring Program
On Saturday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Lightford Recreation Center, 809 Madison St. in Maywood, community leaders are invited to learn more about the Exploring Program and Youth Protection Training. Exploring exists to teach important life and career skills to young people from all backgrounds through immersive career experiences and mentorship provided by community and business leaders. Help launch One Book, One Proviso
On Saturday, Sept. 7, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Afriware Books, 1701 S. 1st Ave. (Suite #400 in the Eisenhower Tower) in Maywood, One Book, One Proviso will host an official kick off reception. Area elected officials, community leaders and representatives from libraries throughout Proviso Township will gather to formally announce the creation of the One Book, One Proviso literacy initiative. Commemorate Bataan Day
On Sunday, Sept. 8, 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Park, the corner of 1st Ave. and Oak St. in Maywood, one of the longest-running World War II memorial events in the country will take place — the 77th Annual Maywood Bataan Day.
“Today, no survivors are alive from the more than 100 young Maywood men of the 33rd Tank Company which was Federalized and sent to fight in the Philippines even before World War II began,” according to a statement released earlier this month the Maywood Bataan Day Organization.
