Melrose Park Cop Who Was Detained For Fatal Maywood Shooting Released

A Melrose Park police officer who was taken into custody in connection to a fatal shooting in Maywood that happened late last month has been released, according to multiple media reports.

The shooting happened on Aug. 27, at 417 W. Lake St. Police responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 7:30 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered two people with gunshot wounds, according to Maywood Police.

Arthur J. Walton Jr., 33, was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner. The medical examiner listed Walton’s residency as the building where the incident happened.

Matthew Carter, 25, was also taken to Loyola, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

According to the Sun-Times Media Wire, the Melrose Park police officer was off duty when the shooting happened. He was arrested on the scene in connection to the homicide, but later released “after being held for the allowable time limit without charging, Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley said.”

So far, the chief said, no charges have been filed and “detectives are still investigating witnesses.” Read more here. VFP
