There’s a lot to do this week in Proviso Township. Here is just a small sampling of events available for you and the family: 

Learn about suicide prevention

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Bellwood Public Library, 600 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, the library will host a presentation on suicide prevention. The presentation will cover what we know about this leading cause of death, the most up-to-date research on prevention, and what we can all do to fight suicide. Participants will learn the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot the warning signs in others, and how to keep ourselves, our loved ones and those in our community safe.

Learn about the biggest problems with utility bills

On Thursday, Sept. 12, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Bellwood Public Library, 600 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, the library will host a presentation on the three biggest problems with utility bills.

Most Illinoisans are overpaying for gas and electricity and don’t even know it! In this engaging lecture, a representative from Citizens Utility Board (CUB) will show you how to decode your bills, spot errors, and take advantage of real programs designed to save you money.

Enjoy Maywood Fest

The 2019 Maywood Fest will be held Sept. 13 through Sept. 15 at Veterans Memorial Park, from 1st to 4th Avenues and Oak Street in Maywood. The fest will feature live music all three days, food and merchandise vendors, kids activities like carnival and pony rides, a petting zoo and more. Go to Maywood-il.org for a full itinerary.

Benefit from a breast cancer support group

On Saturday, Sept. 14, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Eisenhower Park District, 700 Speechley Blvd. in Hillside, the Bellwood Breast Cancer Support Group will host a Meet and Greet for survivors, those fighting breast cancer, family members and caregivers.

Sample local residents’ salsa

On Saturday, Sept. 14, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood (room 201), the library will host its 2nd Annual Salsa Contest. Sample homemade salsa made by local residents and vote for your favorite one. Prizes awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners. Deadline for registering is Sept. 9. Focus on Maywood’s business climate

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, 8:30 a.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, attend the Village of Maywood Mayor and Trustees Business Focus Breakfast.
