Last Thursday, Lynda Schueler, the executive director of the Maywood-based nonprofit Housing Forward, issued what amounted to an emergency all-points bulletin by email to significant stakeholders in Housing Forward’s PADS shelter program with an urgent appeal for reinforcements in the fight against homelessness.

Proviso Idol Winners Crowned

Nine area young people competed for cash prizes in the 8th annual Proviso Idol competition, held Dec. 2 at Proviso West High School School in Hillside. The first-place winners in each of the four divisions won $700 in cash.

At least 100 people converged near 5th Ave. and St. Charles Rd. in Maywood on Dec. 1 to celebrate the lighting of Maywood’s official Christmas tree. The event featured food, ice sculptures, live entertainment and … live reindeer.

Quinn Center, Seeking Director, Wins $25K Award from Loyola

The Quinn Community Center at St. Eulalia Church, located at 1851 S. 9th Ave. in Maywood, recently won Loyola University Chicago’s annual Martyrs Award, which “honors the memory of eight Universidad Centroamericana martyrs, six of which were Jesuit priests, who were murdered in 1989 for their commitment to social justice,” according to a Loyola statement.
