J.W. Scott, a decorated Korean War veteran who went from driving cabs part-time while working at Campbell Soup Company to founding People Cab Co., based in Bellwood, has died.

Mary Patton, Longtime Maywood Resident, Dies at 100

Mary Patton, a longtime Maywood resident, died on Sept. 3. She had celebrated her 100th birthday in May, according to relatives.

“So much can be wonderfully said about this amazing woman,” recalled her granddaughter, Vicky Robinson Arrington, in a Facebook post. “Among her many gifts & talents was that of a master seamstress. She made the outfit she is wearing as well as the jacket I am wearing” (see photo below).

Funeral Arrangements Set for 14-year-old Shooting Victim

Screen Shot 2017-09-05 at 12.36.54 AMFuneral arrangements have been announced for a teenager who was fatally shot on Aug. 30 on the 600 block of 11th Ave. in Maywood.

The victim, who has been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as 14-year-old Michael Jones (pictured, left, at a younger age), of Maywood, was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead the next day.

Simeon Wright, Emmett Till Witness and Former Bellwood Resident, Dies at 74

Simeon Wright, who witnessed the abduction of his cousin Emmett Till in 1955, died on Sept. 4 from cancer, according to a report by the USA Today Network. He was 74. Wright’s death was confirmed by his friends, the network noted.

Frances “Dee Dee” Hampton, Sister of Bill and Fred Hampton, Dies at 69

A prominent Maywood family has lost another member. Frances “Dee Dee” Hampton, the sister of civil rights icon and former Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, and Maywood park district commissioner Bill Hampton, died suddenly on Aug. 23, according to Bill, who confirmed his sister’s death over the phone on Thursday. She was 69.
