Kiana Walker spent the holidays this year working as a life skills trainer at Restorative Rehab Service in Carbondale, a firm that helps those suffering from neurological trauma live independently and develop life skills. When she wasn’t working at the rehabilitation firm, she was working as a cashier at Party City. But it wasn’t enough.

Growing up, Omolabake Oyetayo’s father always said to her, ‘It takes brains to work with brains.” That’s mostly what has motivated the 17-year-old to study neuroscience this fall at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

During their third annual scholarship fundraiser, held June 28 on the rooftop at Urban Pioneer Group in Forest Park, the community and civic groups 209 Together and Kiwanis Club of Forest Park raised more than $16,000 to benefit students at Proviso East, Proviso West and Proviso Math and Science.
