Daylight Shooting in Maywood Raises Alarm

A recent daylight shooting in Maywood has one man counting his blessings. A Maywood native, who later declined to be identified, was jogging through his hometown yesterday when he came face-to-face with an active shooter, he said.

The incident happened Friday at around 3 p.m., according to his account. The time was later confirmed by Maywood police.

The jogger would later describe the incident in harrowing detail on his Facebook page, just hours after it took place.

“I decided to take a jog today from my doctor’s office to my aunt’s house. I ran from Oak Park to #maywood. As I approach the corner of [9th and School St.] a car is about to allow me to run past her but before I can run in front of her car another car T-bone her car. A guy opens the passenger side door, looks at me and opens fire on the car at the stop sign.

To say that was the scariest thing ever to happen to me in my life is an understatement. Then the guy drives up a little to the first house on the corner and holds his arm out of the window as a kid and myself are on the street and continues to shoot indiscriminately.”

In an interview today, Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley said that no one was injured during the afternoon shooting; however, hours later, one person was injured during a shooting that happened on the 1100 block of 11th Ave. at around 9 p.m. Talley didn’t specify whether or not the two shootings were related.

The jogger said that Maywood police didn’t show up to the scene of the shooting until 30 minutes after it happened. He said someone else called the police.

“One police van drove by and that was all,” he said during an interview today. “A half-hour later I see multiple police cars drive to the scene of the incident. Glad no one was hurt at the time.”

Talley said that he would have to confirm when the police dispatch got a call about the shooting in order to determine the response time.

“If he called and we didn’t get there until 30 minutes later, I have a problem with that,” Talley said. “Our village is less than 2.7 square miles, we have a four-minute response time for all service calls. If someone else called, they may have called [well after the shooting took place].”

Talley said that there have been about seven shootings so far this year, in addition to the multiple shootings reported on New Year’s Day.

“We had 20 shots fired calls, but they weren’t all shots fired,” he said. “Some of them were firecrackers.”

Talley said that the shootings are probably related to the policing activities taking place in Chicago, adding that Maywood police are “addressing a lot of gang activity” in the village.

“People are mobile,” he said. “Chicago is putting a lot of pressure on individuals and consequently they’re going to every town. Bellwood, Broadview and other neighboring suburbs are also experiencing a lot of shootings. As long as we’re chasing people, they’re going to go to other places.”

The spike in shootings, however, shouldn’t be confused with a general spike in criminal activity, which has decreased markedly, Talley said.

“Crime is down big time and that’s all kinds of crimes,” he said. “In 2015, we had 13 homicides. In 2016, we had four murders and one justifiable homicide. Someone was shot while breaking into a house.”

This year, there has been at least one homicide. On Jan. 8, an Oak Brook man was fatally shot while sitting inside of a parked car on the 400 block of South 14th Ave., according to a Chicago Tribune report. VFP

A previous version of this posting included the name of the man who witnessed last Friday’s shooting. This article has since been updated, upon his request, to omit that information, since he wasn’t fully aware that his identity would be included in the story.

MAYWOOD–When newlyweds Valane and LaTrina Spaulding honeymooned to Beijing this year, the city’s thriving kite-flying culture made such an impression that Valane brought back some of that aerial passion to America–and in particular, Maywood, the place where he grew up.

“There were people flying kites in every park in Beijing that we came across,” Spaulding said. “It took me back to my childhood days. We don’t do that anymore.”

Those nostalgic moments in China would lead to yesterday’s Family Kite Day held at Conner-Heise Memorial Park on 10th and Washington, from 11 AM to 5 PM.

“I’m just trying to bring a little life, a little color, into our community,” said Spaulding, a Proviso East alumnus.

What began as a way to spread financial literacy and security to people in his community has spawned into a far more encompassing endeavor.

Spaulding, who majored in Finance at the University of Illinois and currently resides in downtown Chicago, has created an organization called Integrating People’s Options to formally facilitate more community events like the one yesterday. He envisions hosting basketball and softball tournaments, and 5K and 10K runs–right here in Maywood. His wife LaTrina, Tiffney Hughes and LaShaundra Murphy comprise the organization’s administrative team.

“I love my community,” Spaulding said. “I love my people, so when I read the news and I see the stuff that’s happening in Maywood–that hurts me. I ride through this community and I don’t see anyone in the parks. I hate that.”

At least for one overcast, but temperate, Saturday afternoon, however, one park in the Village was animated by an Imperial City pastime imported to the Village of Eternal Light. VFP
